TERRORISM, DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES AND POST- TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER AMONG VICTIMS OF INSURGENCY IN TURAN DISTRICT OF BENUE STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

This study investigated terrorism, demographic variables and posttraumatic stress disorder among victims of insurgency in Turan District of Benue State. The cross- sectional survey design was adopted. Three hundred and eleven (311) victims of insurgency were selected using accidental sampling technique. They were 149 (47.9%) males and 162 (52.1%) females within the age range of 19-57 years, mean age of 23.46 (SD=3.50). The Terrorism Impact Scale and the PTSD Checklist Scale were used for data collection. Five hypotheses were formulated and tested using simple linear regression and Univariate Analysis of Variance. The results revealed that, there was no significant influence of terrorism on posttraumatic stress disorder. The result also showed that, sex did not differ significantly on posttraumatic stress disorder among victims of insurgency. The result of the analysis equally revealed that, age was not statistically significant on posttraumatic stress disorder among victims of insurgency. The result computed also indicated that, nature of loss was not statistically significant on Posttraumatic stress disorder among victims of insurgency. Finally, there was no interaction effect of sex, age and nature of loss on posttraumatic stress disorder among victims of insurgency. It was therefore concluded that, terrorism, sex, age and nature of loss have no significant influence on posttraumatic stress disorder among victims of insurgency in Turan district of Benue State. It was therefore recommended that, internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps should be established in Turan district where people who are displaced from their homes would be camped there temporally while relief materials are given to them as a show of love and belongingness to the victims.
