STUDENTS’ VOCATIONAL ASPIRATION AND PARENTAL PREFERENCE AS PREDICTORS OF CAREER CHOICE AMONG SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN SOKOTO METROPOLIS, NIGERIA

Abstract

This paper examined Student’s vocational aspirations and parental preference as predictors of career choice among Senior secondary school students in Sokoto Metropolis. The study adopted a correlational survey design to find out if vocational aspiration and parental preference predicts career choice of secondary school students. Senior secondary school students SS II were used and a sample of 364 respondents were selected using multi stage sampling technique. Motivation for occupational preference scale and children vocational aspiration questionnaire was used to collect the data for this research work. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. Pearson product moment correlation coefficient was used to answer the research question while the hypotheses were tested using multiple regression analysis. The result revealed that vocational aspirations did not predict career choice of students and parental preference significantly predicts career choice of students. The study concluded t999hat parental preference was more related to career choice of students than their vocational aspiration. The study recommended that government and educational planners should provide proper support for guidance and counselling services so as to enhance students development in careers.
