SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC PREDICTORS OF VIOLENT CRIME AND RISK OF VIOLENT RECIDIVISM OF INMATES IN NIGERIAN CORRECTIONAL SERVICES, MEDIUM SECURITY CUSTODIAL CENTER, KEFFI, NIGERIA

Abstract

This study investigated psychological predictors of violent crimes and risk of violent recidivism among incarcerated inmates of Medium Security Custodial Center Keffi. This study adopted prison admission register inspection and cross-sectional survey design in which the register was examined. The participants for this study were incarcerated inmates of Medium Security Custodial Center Keffi. Participants were required to complete Psychological Index of Violent Crime scale (PIVC) and Violence Risk Assessment Guide (VRAG). One hypothesis was tested and the result showed that, demographic variable of age (X=.578a , P=.447, F=.495), Marital Status (X=.498, P=.480, F=.634), Education (X=.675a , P=.411, F=545) and Occupation (x=.743a , p=.384, F=.447) had significant influence over violent crimes and risk of violent recidivism among inmates of Nigerian Correctional Services, Medium Security Custodial Center, Keffi. This research has provided social indicators for security and crime management. Based on the result of the research, we recommend that there is need specialized treatment to be included in the rehabilitation and reformation of inmates in the Nigerian Correctional Services for policies on security development and crime control to accommodate the effectiveness of correctional services in order to promote relapsepreventive measure of incarcerated inmates upon their release from correctional custody
