Abstract

The study investigated the relationship between social media and academic achievement of senior secondary school student in Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Two research questions were raised while Two hypotheses are formulated to be tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted a correlation research design. The population of the study comprised 24, 771 students from the 77 public senior secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja. The sample size of 394 was drawn through multistage sampling procedure. The researcher developed two instruments for data collection: Social Media Use Scale (SMUS) and English Language Achievement Test (ELAT). The instruments were validated with established logical indices of 0.77 for SMUS and 0.83 for ELAT. Reliability coefficient for SMUS yielded a Chronbach Alpha of 0.81 and ELAT yielded KR-20 of 0.81 respectively. Mean and Standard Deviation were used to answer the research question while Person Product Movement Correlation was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level significance. The findings of the study revealed that; there is a significant relationship between whatsapp, Facebook, and academic achievement of senior secondary school students in the FCT Abuja. The study recommended among others that counselors should advise students on its potential downsides and promote healthy whatsapp usage habits encouraging students to use WhatsApp for academic collaboration and information sharing, while also educating them about time management, potential distractions, and the importance of balancing online and offline activities
