LEISURE BOREDOM, SENSATION-SEEKING AND CELL PHONE ADDICTION AMONG UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF BENUE STATE UNIVERSITY, MAKURDI.

Abstract

This study investigated Leisure Boredom and Sensation Seeking as predictors of Cell-phone Addiction among undergraduate students of Benue State University, Makurdi. The study adopted Cross sectional survey design with 219 participants out of which 99(45.2%) were male and 120(54.8%) were female students. Their ages ranged between 17-38years with a mean age of 24.62(SD=5.38)years. The sample for the study was drawn using Simple Random sampling. For the purpose of data collection, the Leisure Boredom Sensation Seeking Scale and Cell-phone Addiction Scale were used. Statistical analysis involved the use of Simple Linear Regression and Standard Multiple Regression. Findings indicated that, there was no significant influence of Leisure boredom on cell-phone addiction among undergraduate students of Benue State University, Makurdi. There wasa significant influence of sensation seeking on cell-phone addiction among undergraduate students of Benue State University, Makurdi. Finally, there was a significant joint influence of Leisure boredom and sensation seeking on cell-phone addiction among undergraduate students of Benue State University, Makurdi. It was therefore recommended that, undergraduate students who have traits of high sensation seeking should take note of their possible predisposition to addict cell-phone usage. They should also pay more attention to cell phone usage on inappropriate occasions because improper phone use can directly deteriorate their academic performance.
