Abstract

This study investigated the influence of vocational maturity on career choice among senior secondary school students in FCT Abuja, Nigeria. Two research questions were raised while Two hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. A sample size of 379 student’s were chosen from a population of 94,938 students in FCT Abuja based on the specification of Kreicie and Morgan (1977). Two instruments were used for the study; A researcher made instrument titled: Vocational Maturity Scale (VMS) and Career Choice Scale (CCS) were used for the collection of data. The instruments yielded a validity index of 0.70, 0.72, 0.75 and 0.78 respectively. The instruments yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.75 and 0.78 for VMS and CCS respectively. The data obtained was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Mean scores and the standard deviation is used to answer the research questions while T-Test issued to test hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that competence/skills and attitude played a significant role in influencing the career choice of students. The research also recommends that the parents and counsellors play a pivotal role in helping/guiding the students in developing and choosing the vocational field/career of their interest
